Experience Macao

02 October 2017

On the south coast of China, just 40 miles from Hong Kong, Macao was chosen by Lonely Planet as one of its Top Ten Regions to Visit in 2015. One of the region’s most exciting destinations, it makes a perfect two or three night addition to a Far East holiday or stopover en route 'Down Under'.

Macao boasts the diversity of a unique heritage, vibrant nightlife, world class dining, exciting attractions and the bustling pace of a city brimming with markets and malls for shopaholics. Meanwhile, the picturesque hills and beaches to the south offer a slower pace and opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors.

The Portuguese arrived in Macao in the 1500s and, although it is today – like Hong Kong – a Special Administrative Region of China, their influence is still strong. This unique Portuguese-Chinese heritage gives Macao a very different atmosphere to its neighbours. Among its greatest treasures is the beautiful UNESCO World Heritage listed Historic Centre, with Taoist temples, baroque churches, elegant squares, a theatre, fortress and even a lighthouse.

Nightlife and Entertainment

The 338m Macao Tower offers tremendous views across the Pearl River Delta - as well as the world’s highest bungee jump! Other attractions include the Giant Panda Pavilion, and the IM Pei designed Science Center featuring the world’s highest resolution 3D planetarium. Few Asian destinations can beat Macao for sheer entertainment value with a dizzying number of bars, clubs, casinos and live shows, including the spectacular House of Dancing Water, featuring high dive acrobatics.

From Michelin-starred restaurants to local cafes, Macao is one of the region’s great food destinations, its diversity ranging from dim sum to some of the best Portuguese food outside Portugal and all kinds of international dishes. Meanwhile, the local Macanese cuisine - arguably one of the world’s first fusion cuisines - combines influences from Portugal, China, South America, India, Africa and Southeast Asia.
