Why Singapore should be on your radar for 2021

21 September 2020

A melting pot of Asian cultures and global influences, Singapore manages to condense a whole lifetime’s worth of experiences into its beguiling island landscape. From its vibrant urban hubs, where you’ll find designer stores and Michelin star restaurants, to its tranquil enclaves of lush tropical rainforest and picturesque beaches, Singapore has been preparing to welcome you back.

Keeping you safe

Singapore’s SG Clean initiative has been implemented by the government to keep visitors and residents safe during and beyond the Covid pandemic. The programme aims to improve public hygiene and cleanliness standards across the country by encouraging everyone to act responsibly and adopt good hygiene standards and social responsibility. This spans from individuals to businesses who will be rewarded with the SG clean quality mark should they meet the sector-specific sanitation and hygiene checklists.

Travel like a local

This year Singapore has looked to entice residents to take a Singapoliday through the SingapoREdiscovers campaign, encouraging them to spend time visiting and appreciating the things they have on their own doorstep in this wondrous country. This has involved partnering with local communities to highlight the hidden gems that exist there and creating itineraries through the distinctive precincts to give people an authentic taste of the area.

As an outside visitor, you can take full advantage of these itineraries, allowing you to see life in Singapore through a local’s eyes and experience the activities that lay undiscovered by most visitors.

Unique architecture

The bayfront area of Singapore is an architectural masterpiece, from the iconic Marina Bay Sands, home to the world’s largest rooftop infinity pool, to Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay, a world-class performing arts centre which has earned the nickname “the Durian” thanks to its close resemblance to the South East Asian delicacy.

There is now a new edition to the Bay area’s striking landscape following the opening of the Apple Marina Bay Sands store. This distinctive spherical structure resembles a peculiar spacecraft of sorts and actually floats on the water. Despite its eye-catching appearance in the day, it is at night when the Apple store truly comes into its own when it lights up against the illuminated backdrop of the already captivating Singapore skyline and the Gardens by the Bay urban nature park.

New experiences

Ever evolving and constantly pushing the boundaries, Singapore’s array of attractions is regularly added to with new and exciting experiences.

The Magical Shores experience on Sentosa Island brings a medley of lights and sounds to Siloso Beach in a multi-sensory experience to awaken your sense of wonder. The show even accounts for wind speed and people’s movement to produce interactive art in real-time so, as the dazzling light display moves across the night sky, illuminating the surrounding greenery, let the enchanting sounds carry you away.

Another new attraction on Sentosa Island is the Stacks lifestyle enclave which brings together street food vendors, event space and all manner of attractions including live music and shopping opportunities. Housed within shipping containers, this new enclave brings a boost to the Singapore nightlife which is now rated amongst the finest in Asia.

An indelible culture

Singapore’s multi-ethnic heritage is on display throughout the city and can be viewed in its array of song and dance performances which draw influence from Chinese, Malay and Indian heritage, as well as in its many art galleries such as National Gallery Singapore and Gajah Gallery which specialises in showcasing southeast Asian contemporary artwork.
